HS2 - VDU and Workstation Health and Safety
Course Overview
Having completed this course you should be able to avoid hazards to health and safety created by the use of personal and laptop computers and the organisation of your immediate working environment.
Many millions of people now spend all their working days sitting in front of display screens whilst operating personal computers. This sedentary lifestyle, and the postures and repetitive physical activity involved can cause serious health problems in both the long and short term. By learning how to adopt a safe seating position and posture, and how to correctly adjust and operate the equipment involved, the risk of health problems arising from the use of VDU's and inappropriate workstation arrangements are significantly reduced.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 place significant responsibilities upon employers for the health and safety of their staff. This course will enable you to take positive action in respect of your own health and safety, so making compliance with the law easier and more effective for the organisation.
The course is broken up into 6 of the following areas:
- why VDU and Workstation health and safety is important
- the legal requirements
- sitting safely - adopting and maintaining the correct sitting position whilst working with VDU's
- arranging the working environment - positioning the work station correctly and ensuring it is free from potential hazards
- taking action in the event of an accident
- using display screens safely - avoiding risks associated with poorly adjusted screens
- using the mouse and keyboard safely - recognising and dealing with the risks associated with inappropriate use
- applying health and safety issues to the use of laptop computers
- using a safety checklist for VDUs and workstations
